This post is long, long overdue. I have a kind of abstract relationship with time – anyone who knows me is aware that I am rarely punctual, often forget important dates, and suck at meeting deadlines. But I usually get around to finishing things eventually.
Sweaterproject is done. The whole point of this blog was to keep a journal of me knitting my first sweater, which it accomplished. The sweater is long since done and has been worn proudly on many occasions. A few other sweaters got cranked out along the way, along with some shawls, many socks, a bunch of hats, and some . . . things that just don’t need to be revisited. I think it was a pretty good run.
And the people I met – wow. Just wow. I met people from all around the country (and from a few other countries) through this blog. It was humbling and thrilling to find out that there were people out there who were interested in reading what I was writing. My sense of how scintillating the fiber arts community is was expanded beyond what I ever could have dreamed possible. You people are mind-blowing. I cannot state this earnestly enough: my life was enriched by meeting you.
One of the things that kept me from wanting to write this ultimate post was a sense of guilt at leaving my knitting phase behind me. It was a great time. I learned a lot and I loved showing the world what I’d been creating with my own sticks and string. I loved knitting alongside my friends. But I have come to appreciate the fact that I am a serial enthusiast. In my time I have gotten really interested in bicycling, programming, photography, violin, knitting, cooking, running, and a few other things. I keep up with all of them to a greater or lesser extent, but I just don’t have the time or the organizational skills (see first paragraph) to go at them all full-bore.
I AM NOT QUITTING KNITTING. Rest assured. I have to keep knitting if for no other reason than that you can’t purchase a decent pair of kilt hose anywhere. And there’s the matter of one-upping my sister from time to time.
